Maneki Neko (招き猫, literally "Beckoning Cat")is a common Japanese sculpture, which is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The sculpture depicts a cat beckoning with an upright paw. A raised right paw supposedly attracts money, while a raised left paw attracts customers.
Usually the lucky cat holds a couple of attributes like a red collar, a bell, decorative bib, a neckerchief or a scarf . Maneki Neko are sometimes depicted holding a coin, usually a gold coin called a koban.
In Western country, it may seem as if the Maneki Neko is waving rather than beckoning. This is due to the difference in gestures and body language recognized by Westerners & Japanese.
Some believe, the longer the paw the bigger the happiness, so you can find silly Maneki's with a real long arm. XD
